Ingredients in popular sunscreen are extremely harmful to aquatic life. Between 6,000 - 10,000 tonnes of sunscreen lotion wind up in coral reef areas every year. The majority of sunscreen brands contain oxybenzone, a UV filtering compound, that is fatal to baby reefs and damaging to adult reefs, which host more than a quarter of all marine fish species. Other sunscreen ingredients, including oxybenzone, have been proven to stunt growth and damage an array of marine life. They are also responsible for decreased fertility and reproduction in fish.

Damaged aquatic life may not feel like a huge deal to us land dwellers, however, oceanic plankton is responsible for producing 50-80% of the oxygen on earth and stores 50% more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. On top of that, coral reefs are estimated to directly support over 500 million people worldwide.

Scence sunscreen is formulated from mango butter and organic coconut oil to soothe and smooth, and a natural zinc suspension in added to ensure even application and broad spectrum protection, keeping skin safe from harmful UVA and UVB exposure.

To release the balm, push the base firmly into the tube lid. Warm the balm stick against your skin for 2-3 seconds to melt then glide to apply.

Tube measures approximately 9cm high x 4cm diameter.

Hand made in Cornwall from ethically sourced, natural and organic ingredients. Packaged in recyclable and fully compostable cardboard tube. With use, the card tube may darken with the natural oils of the balm, developing a deeper patina. This is normal and doesn’t affect the quality of the balm.

Palm oil free and suitable for vegans.

Store in a cool, dry place. This natural balm will soften in warm temperatures above 30 degrees but will become firm again when cooled.

Mango butter, organic coconut oil, zinc oxide, cococaprylate/caprate, polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate (natural emulsifier), isostearic acid (natural emulsifier), sunflower seed wax, organic fruit flavour oils.

The ingredients contained in this product are 100% natural and free from parabens, aluminium, plastic and gluten. Any organic ingredients used are certified by the Soil Association.

Founder Krista Taylor moved to Cornwall as a teenager to study at Falmouth School of Arts. She had a career in fine art and design, before retraining in complementary therapies. Since qualifying in anatomy and physiology, aromatherapy and massage therapies, Krista has been researching, formulating and perfecting the Scence range along with her sister Mel; developing handmade skincare products at their lab in in Penryn, a mile west of Falmouth. The eco-friendly lab is located in Waterside House at the head of Penryn River, a beautiful environment where they are literally a few paces from the water - they also generate their own power using solar panels on the roof!

The sisters have always been interested in natural oils and the efficacy of herbs, and felt frustrated that so much of the natural skincare on offer was packaged in single use plastic containers and applicators. They knew we were not alone in feeling this conflict and felt strongly that the way forward was to develop new ways of packaging the brand, without compromising the environment.

After making balms for family and friends that needed help with eczema and sensitive skin, they were particularly interested in addressing specific needs, as well as developing a really effective deodorant that didn’t use questionable ingredients like aluminium.

The result is Scence skincare – beautiful, nourishing, natural and vegan ingredients, all poured into our paper-based, compostable and recyclable packaging.
